About a week ago, I jumped at the chance to go photograph a friend of mine in her Greenville, SC studio. She is a ceramic artist and one of the most incredibly talented people I know.
Jennifer and I go back – waaaayyyyy back to college days. She was uber cool, hip and quiet and sat in the back of one of our torturous design classes with one of the best teachers and mentors I have ever had the luxury of knowing. I was a nerdy spaz and sat in the front and talked too much and wore every part of my neuroses on my sleeve. Somehow, we found each other in this big wide world and stuck together. To say we have been through a lot in our many years as friends is an understatement.
Jennifer – aka Crave Studio – has been doing ceramics for a while now. Her products are as cool as she is. Sleek and complex at the same time. Thoughtful and useful. Unique and beautiful. They honestly could not reflect her or her aesthetic more. She is continually updating her collections and adding to her wares. Among my new favorites is the Cloud 9 series. But there is literally loads to choose from. There are decorative items. Functional pieces. Gifts. There are just so many awesome little goodies to choose from, I get an overdose of I-want-itis when I walk into her perfectly staged showroom. And they are all handmade with heart and love by her.
I spent 2 days in her calm, quiet, and cozy studio in what is becoming the trendiest part of Greenville (of course… It’s so hip, it doesn’t even realize it yet.) And I photographed her process, place, procedures and some amazing portraits. We laughed a lot and remembered loads of wonderful things and caught up on new and important issues – like Indie Craft Parade, Makers Summit, travel plans, cameras, and love. As you can tell, I enjoyed every second of my time with her.
Oh…and one more thing. In many ways, Jennifer is the reason I have become what I am. She has listened, advised, pushed and pulled me into admitting I want things I don’t even know I am ready for. And I couldn’t be more grateful either.
And by gollyfolly – buy some of these little pears! They are perfectly perfect.
